Delta Force Seal Team 6, also known as DEVGRU, is a United States Navy special operations unit that is responsible for counter-terrorism operations.
History
The origins of Delta Force Seal Team 6 can be traced back to the failed attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran in 1980. The mission, known as Operation Eagle Claw, highlighted the need for a specialized unit that could carry out complex and high-risk missions.
In response, the United States government formed Delta Force, also known as the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, in 1977. Delta Force was an elite unit that was trained to conduct covert and unconventional warfare.
In 1980, the United States Navy formed Seal Team 6, also known as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, as a response to the increasing number of terrorist attacks against American targets.
Delta Force and Seal Team 6 worked closely together and became known as the "Tier One" units, meaning they were the most elite and specialized units in the United States military.
Training
The training for Delta Force and Seal Team 6 is intense and rigorous. Both units require candidates to be in top physical condition and have extensive experience in their respective fields.
Delta Force focuses on counter-terrorism operations and unconventional warfare. Candidates must have experience in special operations, such as the Green Berets, Rangers, or Special Forces, before they can apply to Delta Force.
Seal Team 6 focuses on maritime operations, such as underwater demolitions and reconnaissance. Candidates must be active-duty Navy SEALs and have completed several deployments before they can apply to Seal Team 6.
Once selected, candidates undergo an extensive training program that includes physical conditioning, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat, and language skills.
Missions
Delta Force and Seal Team 6 have been involved in some of the most high-profile and dangerous missions in the history of the United States military.
In 1983, Delta Force carried out Operation Urgent Fury, a mission to invade Grenada and rescue American medical students who were being held hostage by the government.
In 1989, Seal Team 6 was involved in the mission to capture Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega.
In 1993, Delta Force was involved in the Battle of Mogadishu, also known as the Black Hawk Down incident. The mission was to capture high-ranking members of the Somali militia, but it went wrong and resulted in the deaths of 18 American soldiers.
In 2011, Seal Team 6 carried out Operation Neptune Spear, which resulted in the death of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
Controversies
Delta Force and Seal Team 6 have faced criticism and controversy over the years.
In 1994, members of Seal Team 6 were involved in the shooting down of two Black Hawk helicopters in Iraq. The incident resulted in the deaths of 15 American soldiers and 1 Malaysian soldier.
In 2017, a member of Seal Team 6 was charged with the murder of a Green Beret in Mali. The incident raised questions about the culture and discipline within Seal Team 6.
Conclusion
Delta Force Seal Team 6 is an elite and specialized unit that is responsible for carrying out some of the most dangerous and high-risk missions in the history of the United States military.
While the units have faced controversy and criticism over the years, their contributions to national security cannot be denied.
